The Fuel Efficient Stoves Project is under way in Tanzania and Malawi and the installation of solar panels in Tanzania. Fuel Efficient Stoves Project in Tanzania and Malawi Deforestation is one of the major problems causing poverty in many rural communities. People have to travel further and spend longer collecting firewood. This while their local environment is being irreversibly damaged. The use of traditional household cooking methods (3-stone fires) have been identified as a major cause of respiratory disease because of the excessive amounts of smoke produced. Emmanuel International is assisting communities in Tanzania and Malawi to address this issue. Training has been provided in the construction of brick stoves which use 50% less firewood than a traditional 3-stone fire, and in a pilot project a number of stoves have been constructed in the homes of staff. The long term aim is to identify the most suitable stove design and to establish a sustainable supply of energy efficient stoves in the rural communities, in which the income prospect for local stove producers is the incentive to produce more. Solar Panels in Tanzania Usolanga lacks resources in so many ways but one thing it has in plentiful supply is sunshine. Its location is ideal to generate electricity using solar power. Together with other donors we have installed solar panels, batteries and electric lights in the dispensary, maternal health centre and staff accommodation. This has made a huge difference to the health centre. Now when mothers give birth at night they can do so under clean, bright electric light rather than a smelly, dim, smoky kerosene lantern. It is encouraging to the dispensary staff who have lighting in their homes in the evening. They are also able to charge mobile phones and use small appliances.
