Claire Hemingway

In Summer 2019, I spent some time in Northern Uganda with the EI team. Here I found out more about the pads project – a community based project visiting primary schools to educate younger girls and prepare them for mensuration. The project provides reusable sanitary ware and underwear to help girls stay in education for the full month.

To find out more about this project, view the Acholi Girls Fairer Future project page on our website.

The pads are simple and cheap to make, with all the materials sourced within Uganda. Each girl receives 4 pads and 4 pairs of underwear, which last around a year, and the school receives washing buckets (some schools have no toilet blocks).

I felt keen to support this project after my time in Pader with the team. Speaking to the girls it was clear the impact of this project; “I can now study without worry”, “It’s made me free”, “I can play my sport freely now”, “I previously stayed at home, but now can wash here at school”. They were so appreciative of this project!

The Marathon

I will be running the Manchester Marathon on 5th April 2020, to fundraise for the project. The 26.2miles will be a big challenge (and the legs are already feeling it!!)…

The Target

I am aiming to raise £750 for this project – that would provide around 300 girls with sanitary ware (approx 2 schools).

Any donations greatly appreciated!
